Blue Badges in Bury are changing

21st November 2011

Blue Badges in Bury are changing…..

Did you know that from June 2011 Bury Council introduced a Blue Badge Policy for Bury to ensure that the Blue Badge process was fair, transparent, paperless and helped to reduced fraud?

Since the introduction of this policy Adult Care Services have:
• Improved the Blue Badge application as customers can now apply over the telephone using our golden number 0161 253 5151, face to face at Adult Care Connect & Direct and on-line at www.bury.gov.uk/adults
• Reduced the number of Blue Badges issued to people who do not or no-longer meet the criteria for a Blue Badge by 46% to ensure that those that are most in need of a badge are able to use disabled parking spaces
• Prevented fraud by ensuring Blue Badges are collected in person rather than being posted out
• Prevented fraud by working in partnership with the Bury Councils Fraud Department, Parking Services and the Police
• Saved £4,800 per year by going paperless

From January 2012 onwards…

In a further bid to reduce fraud the government will be introducing major changes to the Blue Badge process from January 2012 to include:

• A new driving license style Blue Badge with digital image of the badge holder and various hidden security measures to ensure it is anti-fraud.
• A National Blue Badge database which all new Blue Badge requests and renewals will forwarded to so that a national processing unit can produce the badges and return them to the Council for the badge holder to collect.

These changes come at a cost and therefore Bury Council will be charging £10 per badge which lasts for three years (upon Government recommendation) to cover significantly reduced administration costs.
• A digital photograph is included in the price, whereas currently Blue Badge holders have to supply two passport-sized photographs which can cost up to £5.
• A plastic Blue Badge and clock holder is also included in the price which will help to keep badges and clocks safe and prevent them from wear and tear.
• Once the Blue Badge has been made at the central processing point it will be delivered back to the Authority using next day delivery to ensure that the customer can collect the badge as soon as possible. This is also included in the £10 fee.

THESE CHANGES ONLY AFFECT PEOPLE WHO APPLY FOR A BADGE AT ANY TIME FROM JANUARY 2012 OR PEOPLE WHOSE BADGE EXPIRES DURING OR AFTER JANUARY 2012*.

*Please note that people can only apply for a badge the month that their badge expires
